Turns out the AI absolutely refuses to Vine Whip Spearow (even though it has no problem attacking Ekans) so a Level 6 Spearow mostly 1v1'd a Level 18 Bulbasaur. Vine Whip is a 3HKO on Wartortle so in theory I could spam Super Potions while whittling it down but Sleep Powder/Poison Powder and Leech Seed complicate things. I was hoping Ekans could Leer it down too but it got max sleep turns so Spearow was the hero we needed all along.
After this Nugget Bridge should be a cakewalk and Spearow can be a more reliable answer to Blue's frog-plant-thing.
