/vp/ is perfectly fine right now because there are new mains series games incoming, and (like it or not) GO is still relatively popular among fans of pokemon, so discussion and hype is high. This board will probably remain pretty active until around June of next year (assuming there's no announcement about pokemon for the Switch by then) and it'll start to Peter off, devolving in to nothing but generals, weeklies, and shitposts.
If anything, then would be the time to can the board, because at that point there's nothing really to discuss, barring DLC or something.
Right now, the only improvement I could see made to the board is to make it red, but really that's more of a personal preference improvement than an actually necessary one.
The mods have picked up the slack and started canning /vpol/ threads, productivity and hype is high, and now that the whole "leakfag vs denialfag" thing is over with, the board is looking pretty nice.
