My parents wanted to come over and see me next week, and I'm not even letting them do that (it's so hard to make people understand that you're refusing their company because you DO care about them, not because you don't!)
Maybe "it's my birthday" was a thinly veiled excuse to blow all their money on something expensive for themselves? I guess we immediately know what kind of a person she is if her birthday is more important than paying rent, though.
