The good
>art direction, both the monsters and human characters are extremely iconic for a reason>fairly sized map, big enough for a gameboy, not so big that it makes travelling between towns ever a big deal before Fly HM, the inclusion of tunnels helps>speaking of HMs, reasonable number of 'em>at least high tier when it comes to encounter tables, not every route is interesting but most of them offer something>TM compatibility makes it so it's pretty difficult to end up with a Pokemon who is completely useless>the most open in terms of in which order you want to tackle various things and which routes you pick>the few BGM tracks it actually has are all pretty good, you won't mind hearing them a lot>stat EXP is better than EVs as far PvE is concernedThe bad
>safari zone mons are unreasonably difficult to find and pure RNG hell to catch, pic very related>learnsets are very often terrible, you will almost always use up your TMs no matter your team comp>NPCs are unable to use TMs, they often end up with nearly unusable movesets or use extremely weak moves even at the E4>and finally, you have no idea what moves do in the first place if it's your first game>the third version, yellow, is mostly worse than RB in terms of pokemon you can catch and really the only appeal there is anime pandering>special stat is a mistake, and so is the Psychic type except unironically because it was supposed to be weak to Ghost, not fucking immune>and we don't talk about Ghost moves, or Bug for that matter
