The entire point of 3D is two fold:
1. Add depth to the visuals
2. Allow the player the augment the game's camera to observe something from a new perspective.
Because you can't control the camera, point 2 is moot, and depth can be simulated using 2D sprites (illustrated in Gen 4/5). So, if they are not willing to surrender control of some aspects of the camera's position, there is no reason to make the game a 3D game. As subtle as it is, all this change from sprites to 3D has done is put them in the same 'graphics' race that CoD and racing games have been working on for years without any kind of real payback for the player.
