I have a theory about Professor Oak; in the intro of RBY he says people CALL him the Pokémon Professor, not that he is a Pokémon Professor. I think this was a nickname of his from when he was a trainer (likely Champion.)
He also claims there is 150 Pokémon, but it was unlikely he knew about Mewtwo, so he probably knew about Mew somehow.
Unused data shows him having a team similar to Blue, but he seems to be the only one with access to the starters, so it is more likely that they were on his team.
I think he was a pioneer of identifying type matchups, which led to him becoming Champion
