You all should remember this is about more than just the national dex. It's about the decline in the series as a whole ever since Gen 6. It's about the willingness to put in less effort, knowing that they will still get profit from Pokemon fans who "just need their fix". It's about the removal of features, only to bring them back as a selling point in the future, to push more units. It's about the complacency and lack of desire to push the series forward truly. Game Freak has their team B working on the worlds highest grossing media franchise, team A (aka highest priority team) is working on "Town"). It's about the refusal to employ more labour, even though the franchise has grown and grown. It's about the inclusion of shallow and surface-level features that should've been developed way more, since Gen 6: Gen 6's story as a whole was just lackluster, postgame in X/Y, ORAS, S/M and many would argue even USUM (Rainbow rocket lasted 1 hour tops). So many features could be taken further, but are just used as a selling point for the next games. I've seen the cycle repeat itself again and again since X/Y and unfortunately I doubt it will change. Wild Area likely exists as a token "open-world area" if you will. Simply used as a marketing tool, but when you play it, it is shallow and undeveloped.
By release we will likely know the best features of the game, because they would've already shown it off, to get people to buy the games. That's why we don't have surprises in the games anymore, because there's so little new to begin with, they don't have any spare material left after they're done with the marketing cycle.
