As for me;
design niches and potentials meant a great lot. At the stage of first generation my encounter with Magnemite and Magneton has prompted me to entertain a possibility of a strictly mechanical pokemon composed of whirling gizmos.
This then-empty spot became somewhat permanent on my list of poke-expectations - such appealing this concept was.
Klinklang has failed to live up to those expectations, however - as I expected this hypothetical pokemon to be much more organized, condensed in its form and sinister.
Ferrothorn filled this vacuum and became one of my favourites. If only it could rotate those spiked metallic surfaces...
Still, it is a pokemon that was guaranteed to receive my attention before it was even created.
Unfortunately, same cannot be said about my current top favourite pokemon.
