Having too much world saving shenanigans will only shift the focus away from the players journey, which is what the games have traditionally focused on. That focus on the player is what makes the 8 badges routine important. The structure guides the player through the game without the need of an overarching plot.
Trying to make Pokemon like other RPGs will only take away what makes Pokemon unique and successful.
