The remakes use level design from older games, so I'm obviously not referring to them. Gen 7 and 8 main entries are the real issue. Routes are small bare hallways. Progression is fully linear while some faggots stop you every few feet. No freedom to be found. Gens 5 and 6 also slip towards this incidentally
To bring up another point I had made prior, without the HMs, you could really in those games how your pokemon were just sitting in a void, only existing for battle. There was at least refresh and the camps, but never "needing" them or at least seeing them in the overworld greatly diminishes the feeling of "working together with your pokemon".
Of course all this is among other issues like bad art direction, terrible yet overbearing writing with plots that feel irrelevant to the MC, everyone's favorite of gen 7 removing the national dex then gen 8 removing pokemon (and moves) altogether at no benefit to the player, enforced the lateral progression of the battle system where instead of doing anything to actually improve or change the combat mechanics they just make up and throw out meaningless gimmicks every gen, yada yada
Overall I believe the newer gens fail as pokemon games, I do not get the sense that Gamefreak understands why this series activated my autism and the outright removal of HMs is but one minor sign of this.
I can see you do not understand that small adventure appeal either and will not change your mind
