I have five who play.
First is one of my best friends. He kinda knows about breeding mechanics and is aware of competitive play but has no desire to go that in depth. He mostly raises teams around his favorite type (Ghost) or based on a specific gimmick.
Second is also a time weathered friend but he has no desire to put any effort in, so he just hacks everything. He doesn't know too much about breeding and doesn't know a thing about the current meta. Most of his teams consist of shiny legends and pokemon with impossible movesets.
The third is friend one's little brother. He doesn't know a thing about breeding or any kind of strategy. He just spams the strongest move. He doesn't really care if he loses to us, but he has Zero interest in competitive play. His teams typically consist of is starter and a bunch of HM users. Maybe a legendary.
Fourth is my little brother. We've played pokemon against each other since Gen 1. He will often wait to see what I'm running and then breed a team to counter mine. While he has a decent grasp on breeding mechanics, He doesn't appreciate the benefits of stat boosting moves.(He thinks Dragon Dance and Quiver Dance are stupid) He often plays over Wifi and is pretty good at it. His teams typically consist of walls or stalling pokemon.
Five is one of my coworkers. We invite her over whenever we have a get together so we can Battle/Trade. She has little to no grasp on strategy or breeding mechanics and usually only uses pokemon she finds cute but somehow finds ways to make them as annoying as possible (Paralysis, Sleep, Infatuation). Her team often has water or normal types. She will usually suggest we take a break and do something else after one or two losses.
there are time when I wish some of them would put a little more effort in but they have lives too. Honestly, I'm pretty happy I even have friends who play.
