Gen II intrudoced more stripes, spikes etc, but it wasn't too much. Not much changed besides slight pokemon design drop.
Gen III crossed the line and had shitty world etc in general.
Gen IV tried to backpedal with pokemon designs to Gen I, did some good mechanics changes and tried to build good world and it kinda succeeded.
Gen V fucked pokemon designs again but at the same time introduced lot of QoL changes and improved audiovisual side of the game. It was last gen in which new stuff was good, like hidden abilities making forgotten mons usable again.
Everything past Gen V is complete trash in every way.
