The joke only kind of works because the initial conversation is between contestants, while Ditto is a spectator... By definition, not a part of the game. It's a joke about being embarrassed by parents, which breaks down if the protagonist is a young child (Pichu) or a competent competitor (Pikachu and Marth).
Also, Ditto does exist in the Smash universe: Its data is in SSBM, and it's a trophy in at least one game.
