Ideally if you have a second DS, you can use the memory link to carry over some details from BW to your BW2 game. Nothing major, you just get a few little scenes touching on what happened in the interim and a few bonus battles. Not a big deal if you don't though.
I'll give you a word of warning though, it can be a little slow at the start, and you'll have a few tutorials you'll have to push through. Once you hit Castelia it lets you take the reins a bit more.
