It recently came to my attention that those things that make up Blue's gym, that every kid thinks are giant legos cause they really do look like it, are most like display cases holding Pokéballs. Which makes perfect fucking sense. Like I knew they weren't actually legos but I never figured out what they really were, pretty sure they really are display cases.
Now, if you count all of them, you'll see there are 224 in total. That number is meaningless, but then add in the 11 legendaries, the 9 Johto starters (that he wouldn't have traded with gold/silver/elm for yet), the 6 currently on his team, and finally Unown (who only appeared for the first time when Gold solved the puzzle), and you get 251.
Probably not intentional but I think it's neat that it works out that way.
