I had a bunch of friends who are pretty casual players of the game, and when gen 5 hit they were excited. But when the final evolutions were revealed a lot of their interest waned.
You can reee all you want, but gen 5 starters sucked ass. In fact most of the mons you could find sucked ass until about mid way through the game. Going through the game with an ugly, weak starter, catching ugly, weak pokemon that don't evolve into anything good is draining. It doesn't matter how cool the late game and post game are if not enough casual players give enough of a shit to get there. I admittedly enjoyed the games enough from the post-game alone to not care, but plenty of my friends dropped pokemon and never came back until Go, which is pretty telling.
