I know the datamine, but gamefreak could have realised what happened in ORAS and prepared for this, scrubbing them from it, giving us a taster to assume we know everything, then BAM! Alternate evolutions revealed.
They know datamining shit happens, so they could be playing a game with us here lads.

The real leaks leak got the new day and night differences between the versions correct. It also states Rockruff has more than one evo, along with it's werewolf form. Werewolves are known for their connection to the night.

With this info we can deduce the werewolf form is Rockruff's night evolution, and the starters will follow as they share the same secret.

I used to really hate the bottom three, yet at some point my opinion just reversed and now I really love them. Honestly, they're just so unique and creative, and a lot more visually interesting than Gen 5 or 6's starters (IMO)

I think imagining what they'd look like in 3D was one thing that led to my change of view, especially with Litten3, who I was most dissapointed in. It looks to have the most potential for fun dynamic animations.

These will really grow on people, I suspect.

Alolan starters get alternate evos, thus every other starter gets alternate evos eventually down the line. This is to make up for the new variant forms.

Or we get Alolan form starters from past gens. Eventually every starter has a variant.

Or we get none, and the starters get no new forms whatsoever, despite the most popular Pokemon.
