I just take a blue, gray, or green marker and trace over my pokemon on the screen, then when I battle my pokemon is shiny. Pretty simple really, but I had trouble the first time too. Also, if you want to power save make sure when you save you hold down the "A" button a little loner, this makes the save more "powerful." That's why it's called a power save.
