I (Sinnohfetus) do appreciate Gen 1 for what it is though, they're the only games that feel like the player is the driving force instead of moving at the whim of the story, since the story is just a set of obstacles in the way of your gym challenge. Kanto as a region is pretty kino in layout, if not particularly diverse, and the Gen 1 dex is large and solid enough to hold up today.
Overall they're pretty based, but for me I'd rather take the gameplay and graphical upgrades from later generations.
