Hey all you animefags, I have a couple of things to ask about the series. Let's start with some background info: I used to watch the shit out of the anime when I was a kid and I think I've seen all of the Kanto and Johto episodes but I stopped watching after that. Since the games have only gotten better, I thought that my good memories of the series are just nostalgia and nothing more. However, when I watched a couple of those old episodes again, I noticed that I still liked them very much. They're really entertaining and I especially like all the jokes such as "frying pan" and the viking joke from the first movie, which btw has some excellent translations in different languages.
Naturally, I decided to try the newer episodes too and I watched around 15 Unova episodes, only to realize that they're much worse. The thing is, they're really boring. All the jokes and the light atmosphere are gone. It seems like the series is trying to be more "serious" and "mature", but only ends up being boring and uncreative. Even Team Rocket seems to have lost their comic relief value: they just attack, try to steal some Pokemon, get their ass kicked and leave without saying even a single funny one-liner. What's the point? Iris and Cilan also both have zero personality and could have as well be completely absent from the series. I've also seen some of the more recent movies like Swords of Justice and Destiny Deoxys but they weren't nearly as good as the three first movies for example. So, here are my questions:
At which point did the anime take this more serious approach?
Was Unova some kind of a low point of the series?
I've seen many people here praise the Diamond/Pearl anime and the new XY anime. What's so different about them when compared to BW?
I really want to start watching the anime again but I fear that all of the seasons suck like BW. What reasons do I have to watch the new episodes if everyone is just serious and boring?
