>>35336230No, not really. Snorunt's core design is a snow yokai. They intended that to be, even if people outside Japan never heard of a Yuki Warashi before. Glalie is NOT a snow yokai but has hints of oni and hockey mask in its design. Later on they added Froslass, which IS connected to Yuki Warashi because it's a Yuki Onna and they're connected to each other in folklore, and the motifs are more in tune with Snorunt's. But that's GameFreak. They can get away with it Glalie. They went through many sketches, concepts, and variations before settling on Snorunt and Glalie as an evolution line.
The difference is that you, as an aspiring artist, just put a face on a turnip and pumpkin. The only motif they have in common are the faces, but that's not enough to make them related to each other. Maybe Snorunt and Glalie were weak in terms of their correlation so they came up with Froslass. I don't know, I don't work at GF. That's why you don't always run to existing Pokemon to defend your design.
Sure, it's fine to reference jack o lanterns, but it's already been done. How would you make yours stand out from Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist? Like I suggested, you can keep the turnip Jack o Lantern motif for its evolution to strengthen the CONCEPT of a turnip jack o'lantern, or you can do like the other anon said keep the pumpkin but add more motifs to both Pokemon (beyond just same faces) to strengthen the idea that they're an evolution line. There are plenty of Pokemon with different faces but similar motifs that tie them in together. When I initially saw them, I didn't think they went well together. Even when you told me about turnip jack o lanterns, I still wasn't convinced because their designs are contrasting each other too much.
