Red and Blue getting their teams swapped up is honestly a god brilliant narrative tool. Seeing both of them going over their quirks with their methods and influencing each other's team was something I felt could've been applied more frequently in the anime outside of maybe getting inspired for a custom move or just learning a move from someone else. The best examples of one trainer being stuck with the pokemon of another trainer that is not traded were when the groups sometimes got mixed up with the TRio members in a forest during an filler or some sorts.
