Granted I've never played one so who knows but I like it when hacks have a little more identity. Something like Emerald Z which came out recently for example, it's Emerald but: new fakemon, new minigames, TM crafting, gym leader shuffling, new areas. Sure, it IS Emerald underneath all that but it still has a lot to say on it's own.
