People can be dimwitted and smart because there are different type of intellect. Good example would be Sheldon Cooper who has multiple PHD but lack real world knowledge and Penny who probably does not even know what data is but actually way smarter than Sheldon.
He not using reserves has more to do with the staff not wanting to animated his reserved pokemon and less with him choose not to use it.
