I went back and grabbed a screenshot from the Ash vs. Gladio episode, because I laughed my ass off at how many special flowers the staff had to give Ash to make him interesting in the Alola context (being chosen by Tapu Koku, being asked to help by Lunala and Solgaleo, having a special never-before-seen Lycanroc). It's all a shame, because a Sun and Moon anime without Ash is so easy to imagine. They've already got a strong ensemble cast with Lillie, Lana, Mallow, Kiawe and Sophocles, all of whom can pass around the MC status depending on the episode. If they absolutely needed a central MC because kids are dumb or whatever, put Kukui in that role. It's not like he'd be the first put-upon teacher/professor character in a children's show. Hell, as much as I have loathed them in previous seasons, keep the TRio over Ash. This is their best incarnation.
