Artists, designers, and even fiction writers draw elements from things they and their audience are familiar with during the planning and design processes.
Just look at something like Cthulhu with its mixture of human, cephalopod, and demon features. It's supposed to be this unfathomable abomination, but even it is depicted with physical features we're all familiar with.
