It turns out when you take multiple episodes to signpost development of a character's attitudes towards losing, you get a much more compelling story out of it.
Also they really like reusing the "young female Gym Leader is inexperienced and undergoes existential crisis" arc don't they? Flannery had one, Maylene has one, Korrina had hers. If Maylene had also been voiced by Lisa Ortiz, you couldn't have convinced me it wasn't a conspiracy.
