The people he says are smart actually FEEL smart, and not in a BBC Sherlock sort of way. The ideas he presents are insightful, and the picture of society he portrays is solid. You feel immersed in the world he narrates.
My only gripe with the author is that he keeps a lefty blog where he whines about bigotry and related gay shit (why is it that the rationalfags are always the first to drink the kool aid? You'd think they'd be smarter than that, but apparently not. It makes me lose faith in humanity seeing people I respect subscribe to looney virtue signalling shit, but what can ya do), but other than that I respect the passion and the quality he pours into his work.
Also, pokemon ARE dumb animals you dumb pokefucker. The games make this very clear. What, you'd rather have them be sentient and subservient slaves? Because that's fucked up.
