Only real randomness is speed ties. But it can be made less random by going through a list of checks like "Pokemon who was sent out first wins the speed tie" and "Ditto transformed loses the speed tie".

There are plenty of things from Ohio that can be used for an excting Pokémon adventure, not being able to realize that is a skill issue.
