I wonder if the lack of thumbs is another of the silly rules from Nintendo/Pokemon Co that they don't want them to look too human or something, even later human-like designs like Sawk and Throh don't have them compared to gen-1 designs like Machamp. They could have at least gone with the design of Sawk/Throh's hands though where it's three fingers spread out across the hand so they could reasonably hold things with it rather than the weird three fingers close together with no thumb design. If they were trying to make them look like paws, not only did they mess that up too since fox paws have four "fingers" but Meowscarada is an example that they can still give them a paw-looking hand with three fingers that still looks like it could reasonably be able to pick up and hold things... since again, the fingers are more spread out.
