Like instead of being a direct jerk, he just thinks so lowly of you he doesn't even notice you while indirectly hindering like beating all the trainers in the route where you're supposed to beat. Later on there could be some event that pisses the rival off and he challenges you and his team is very strong. And after you beat him he starts to notice you more and more and thinks less lowly of you. And at the end, he accepts that you're better than him.
Well that's what I had my plan for my own tomboy girl rival in pic related. But my game is far from finished so you can pick up that idea if you want.

Too many three stages just makes a lot of the designs, mainly the middle stages, feel too forgettable. I think a dex should have significantly more two stages. But of course, throw in a couple single / triple stages here and there too.
