Back in Blue, I kept trying to fish up Shellders to evolve my Slowpoke, I eventually gave up at like 35 thinking something was wrong with the game. Same thing happened in gen 2, tried to get Slowbro/king the same way and it didn't work out. It was only until 4th gen I realized how it actually evolved into either of them.
