I meant "designated driver" in a figurative sense (he's the straight man to all of their shenanigans), but it's definitely the case in a literal sense as well.

I imagine Nemona would be able to handle a lot, and your idea for Penny is spot on.

Yes! You hit the nail on the head. The chemistry between the SV crew is fantastic. They don't just tell you "hey, these guys are your friends", you get to know them and build a connection with them, all culminating at the end. Like you said, the fact that they're not overly friendly towards each other sometimes (Nemona can be a bit insensitive, Arven gets annoyed with Nemona's battle obsession, Penny is a bit snappy and sarcastic) makes them so much more realistic. I love them very very much.
