Honestly most Pokemon rivals are kind of bland to me because you always play as some prodigy / chosen one. The only time that a jerk rival ever meant anything for the narrative was in the TV show, where Ash is constantly falling behind Gary or Paul and begins to doubt himself. This never happens in the games because you're always set up to win.
