>>56791157Being a commercial is not unique, and not bad either. 90% of all anime is commercials - for manga, video games, idols, pachinko machines, the fucking JSDF, etc. Original anime is extremely rare for a reason. The thing is, a good studio can take the material given to them and turn it into something great regardless. There are even cases when anime surpassed its source material, like K-ON! or Demon Slayer.
And I'd say that early on, the Pokemon anime showed a lot of potential. They legitimately tried to take the simple and limited game and turn it into a story worth watching. They practically created characters like Brock and Misty from nothing, and it worked. Problems began after the franchise took off into the stratosphere and TPC demanded all rough edges sanded off in the anime.
I watched the first two seasons as a kid and loved them like everyone else. Then I took a break from Pokemon, and when I saw D&P on TV as a teenager, I was stunned by how bland and sauceless it was compared to the show I remembered from my childhood. At first I thought that I just grew up, but after I rewatched the original, I realized that it wasn't just nostalgia, the show was legitimately entertaining.
