If the same pokemon have different stats, the young player doesn't know EV's/IV's is a thing (especially in an era when internet connection wasn't widely accessible). All the kid knows is that he could use these two pidgeys for different roles in the team party and steamroll the game because the difficulty is dumbed down anyway. When the kid breeding these two Pidgeots that's not because the kid wants a competitively viable Pidgeots but a pidgey which is the descendant which also have different stats.
It's all up to the child's imagination how the game will be played and Nintendo is especially noticed to exploit this with their game design. This is why Smash Bros Melee tournaments are shut down because from a corporate standpoint,this will hurt the intended brand when the thoughtless NPC's perception of said brand is challenged by the truth.
