I greatly underestimated Skyla, but thankfully not to any tragic degree. Wire did come out of his fight with that Swanna with only 4 HP remaining, though. Lesson learned for future Challenge Mode runs. I believe that the next thing that happens is a whole bunch of Plasma plot, broken up after a bit by the next gym. I will be training up Battle Axe the Axew in preparation for said gym. In fact, now that Fang is evolved and has Thunder Fang, I'm tempted to actually drop Wire from the team completely in favor of Battle Axe.
