Before then pokemon had its low points, gen 2 was a mixed bag, gen 3 had some hot garbage, 4 was incredibly mediocre. It had very few failures and successes. gen 5 was genuinely the best designed gen. it had a couple shitstorms like the Genies and kyrems alt forms, but the hate for gen 5 is very superficial.
Gen 6 was a fucking trasheap. the amount of great pokemon lines could be counted on one hand. gen 7 was slightly better, but not by much.
As shit as modern pokemon are, every now and then they still hit one out of the park.
