All we knew about Greninja was that it's name was ゲッコウガ and some even thought the name was implying something about a Moonlight Moth, completely unrelated to Froakie. That's the only bit of Greninja related info we got months before release, and that's only because the names of all the Gen VI pokemon leaked around July of that year.
