It's based on an extinct species of amphibian called a 'Diplocaulus' - the 'extinct' part being the reason it's part ghost. Funny how nature works some times - it came up with the 'flying wing' design long before humans did, though in this case it was to make Diplocaulus hydrodynamic rather than aerodynamic.
