It's an extrapolation of the force field concept---if you can make non-material physical walls made purely out of magic/light, well then by extrapolation who is to say they can't be any shape? If you can make a physical wall from "mental energy" or whatever the fuck, you should logically be able to make a force field sword, or anything you can imagine.
These wouldn't be objects with mass so they wouldn't work for shit like hammers, but for cutting and slicing sure, just conjure a really sharp force field.
