She uses her wits to get out of tricky situations, not the brute force of her pokemon since they are for the most part unevolved. Then we get into her character depth at the end of the red/blue/green arc when both her fear of birds, and her motivations for taking squirtle are revealed. This fear of birds is important as she later must overcome it in the gold/silver/crystal arc. She's easily my favorite pokegirl.
