The cool as fuck character designs, new country, and more JRPG-like narrative were all eye-catching and they generated tons of hype. Then the game dropped and the characters became memorable as fuck because the writing supported their cool-looking designs. Black and White's ugly as fuck Dex was a bit of a crippling factor, and its generally well-regarded story has some issues, but all of that stuff was more or less fixed in Black and White 2.
If BW1 had led with BW2's Pokemon roster, it would have been received better. I'll never get over how good Floccessy Ranch is.

GSC, DPPt, and BW2 are some of the most well-regarded games in the franchise, and all of them are like more refined versions of the preceding titles. DPPt brutally mogs RSE.
Anyway, everything you just said about XY is done better in Sword and Shield, DexCut notwithstanding. Berry Farming is stupid as shit and saying Gen 5 removed it is somewhat disingenuous because you could buy them in Black and White 2; it's TECHNICALLY true, that you couldn't grow them, but it's not like you couldn't have a good supply of them on hand. Also, it very slightly made team-building less of a pain in the fucking ass, but so did Gen 5 with its renovations to EXP gain and free Lucky Egg.
Team building didn't really become a streamlined, FUN, process until Generation 8.
