Gen 7. Probably the most frustrating experience I've had with Pokemon or any RPG. Tutorials lasted way too long, and when combined with the cast of characters constantly interrupting you on the road, it just becomes a chore to sit through. I didn't even enjoy my usual Pokemon gameplay loop of trading, collecting and PvP, because all of those features suddenly became way worse. No PSS, no DexNav, no fun social features like the O-Powers, or Friend Safari exchange or Secret Bases or anything. Festival Plaza is just bad Join Avenue, and generally less intuitive than PSS as a multiplayer hub.
The UI design is kinda bad, because now you have Rotom Dex onscreen at all times. Instead of being able to navigate game menus via touch controls like HGSS and XY, Rotom's Advice is apparently so important that it has to take up the space now. And it's mostly just more tutorial shit like "Use Burns to weaken the enemy's Attack stat!" or whatever.
I did like the writing for the characters, but then I don't really play these games for the human cast. If you wanted Pokemon games to feel more like anime adventures then I guess this might be your thing. But this is where I put the series down.
