Trainers are journalists and interns. The gym doubles as a newspaper publishing office for the Kalos Times.

The gym's gimmick is that you have to run errands for all the busy people in the bustling office space, picking up a print here and giving it to somebody over there, then being sent off again while battling people on the way.
I'm the the corner office at the far end and you have to assemble the draft for tomorrow's issue before I let you in, not realizing you are a challenger. I apologize and we go in my personal elevator to the roof. The battle begins.
I use a line-up of Noctowl, Tauros, Zangoose and my signature pokémon: a Kecleon called Scoop.
If you beat them all you will earn the Simple Badge (a white square in a black frame). You also earn the TM "Investigate", which uses a random move from the enemy pokémon against him.
I then politely ask you to leave. I'm a very busy man.
