Gen V seems to have been the Pokemon franchise's collective failure, both anime and games. They created all this hype about taking a new direction: all new Pokemon, no old gens before the Elite Four, new sprites, etc. And the anime made Team Rocket more serious, Ash had a new design, Brock was written out, Pikachu reset-shit. Except the fan base didn't really respond to it. They completely backtrack on everything: old gens are back in sequels, Team Rocket goes back to old uniforms, Pikachu gets (slightly) stronger, Brock has cameo in special, Charizard brought back, heavy references to past gens, fucking DAWN. Even Butterfree, for fuck's sake. Not even Game Freak/Nintendo liked most of Gen V, OP. It sucked.
Personally, gen IV was my generation. About on par with gen I (nostalgia factor plays a heavy part in that). It's really when I got back into it. Yes, it was completely uninspired and formulaic, and totally forgettable. But hey, there you go.
