You're an idiot if you really think they did this to help the competitive meta. The only competitive scene GameFreak cares about is the VGC, which has almost always been regional dex only at the start of every new generation. Removing a large portion of Pokemon usable throughout the entire game does nothing to help balance VGC. And I can almost guarantee competitive players in VGC will centralize the meta around the same handful of Pokemon, so nothing will change.
My theory, this is just a way for them to sell the third version or 'special edition' of the generation. "SUPER SWORD AND SHIELD" or whatever it will be. That will likely have the full national dex. Which, sorry Matsuda, but no. I'm tired of GameFreak not including features that should have been in the game at the start of the generation and then trying to push them in the 'ultra' version of the generation.
