It was already an official term encompassing an egg group, and it helped to deflate the relatively bloated list of Normal and Psychic types. It also served to counter Dragons which by the time of gen 5 had stopped being rare becoming just a common type like any other. Not to mention it had the greatest potential for merchandise basically representing an archetype for the little girl demographic. And it is abstract enough to include other similar propositions like light or magic in a single label, as they admitted they had a few name candidates for this type before definitely deciding on fairy.
Even I, who generally dislikes this type, knew it was inevitable.
I'm at least glad that among the concepts it encircles as it develops a an identity across the generations, it includes fantasy folklore, with mons like Zacian and Xerneas.
