Gen VI had piss poor content, barely any story, MUH MEGAS GUYZ, a shit and rushed region (it started alright for the first, say, four towns and then all of them suddenly took back the old style of having square houses juste placed there in the grass/mud. Compare Aquacorde to Camphrier for exemple), and so many other things that it got wrong.
Gen V had the most polished games of the franchise and if you seriously played the game, you can feel it. Every little thing has care put into it and there are so many details and so much content. And the story, while not great if you compare it to most other video games stories, is the most developped of the series and still keeps a good balance between scenario and freedom.
Yet people will still spit on it because "muh Grimer design was so much better than Trubbish D'x".
Gen V certainly didn't do everything right, but Gen VI did everything wrong.
