The appeal of Pokemon-pets in a their animal-liek design concept didnt really go away, but there is clearly more interest in the staged human-shaped evolutions, i.e. you first start with a cute pet, then it transform into something in-between full-anthro and an animal and finally it goes into super-humanlike form. You can see the pattern here.
